Overview
Bill Splitter lets you scan a receipt, itemize it, assign items to people, and split tax and tip. The app is designed to function offline; by default, your receipt photos and item data stay on your device.

What data we collect
We aim to minimize data collection. The following describes data handled by the app:
Receipt photos and OCR
When you take or select a receipt photo, the image is stored locally on your device. Text recognition (OCR) is performed on-device. We do not automatically upload receipt images or recognized text to any server.
- Images are saved to your device/app storage.
- OCR text is kept in app memory/state.
Items, people, and splits
Item names, prices, people names, tax/tip settings, and assignments are stored locally for your current session. You can clear them at any time inside the app.
- No automatic syncing.
- Temporary until you close or reset the app state.
Optional sharing
If you choose to share a summary (e.g., via your device share sheet), your device will hand that data to the chosen destination (e.g., Messages, Mail). We do not receive a copy.
Analytics and tracking
We do not embed third‑party analytics or advertising SDKs in the core app build. Platform‑level diagnostics (e.g., crash reports) may be handled by your device OS or app store according to their policies.
How we use the data
- To perform on‑device OCR and extract line items from your image.
- To calculate totals, tax, and tip, and attribute items to people you assign.
- To generate a shareable summary only when you explicitly ask the device to share.
Permissions
- Camera — to capture photos of receipts when you choose to use the camera.
- Photo library — to pick an existing receipt image.
Data retention and deletion
Because we do not run a backend for your data, deletion happens on your device. You may:
- Remove the current receipt image and items in the app.
- Uninstall the app to delete all locally stored data related to the app.
Your choices
- Use the app offline without creating an account.
- Crop images before OCR to limit the content being processed.
- Manually edit or remove detected items before they are used.
- Choose whether to share a summary; nothing is shared by default.
Children’s privacy
The app is not directed to children under 13. If you believe a child provided us with information, contact us and we will assist with deletion guidance for the device.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy to reflect improvements to the app or changes to platform policies. Material changes will be reflected by updating the effective date above.
